Museum of the Americas

Neo-colonial architecture that houses a museum dedicated to the American continent.

The Museum of the Americas is a public museum in the Moncloa district that houses collections of American archaeology and ethnography. It covers a period ranging from American prehistory to the present day, with particular emphasis on pre-Columbian archaeology, ethnography and colonial art, and comprises a collection of more than 25,000 objects.

The museum is located in a historicist and neo-colonial-style building, constructed in 1954 and designed to extol the missionary and civilising work of Spain in America. The architectural style interprets religious and colonial architecture using red brick and it includes an American baroque-style tower with a large arch on the facade.

The interior is laid out around a cloister with a garden area and has two floors with high ceilings and longitudinal, ribbed vaults, used as exhibition spaces.
